  42. To make the connection work, you have to find modem settings (and usually
  43. not Kermit settings) that coerce the modems into working with each other.
  44. Normally, with modern modems, this is supposed to happen automatically in
  45. the negotiations that take place when the modems first make contact, but
  46. sometimes the negotiations fail or (worse) seem to succeed when they
  47. shouldn't have.  Get out your modem manual(s) and read, in particular, about
  48. the modulation and error-correction selections, especially fallback.  One
  49. possible explanation is that one modem has been told not to fall back and
  50. the other is falling back, and so they lose the ability to talk to each
  51. other.  Usually the best course is to use the modem's defaults for
  52. everything, which generally allow all options and fallbacks to be
  53. negotiated, and don't disallow anything.  But everything depends on the
  54. particular modem.  And some modems are just plain buggy -- or worse: some
  55. modems are lacking certain essential features; see our FAQ about RPI modems,
